With the Halloween holiday quickly approaching us and the weather turning a ghastly cold, now would be a great time to discuss your preparedness against the un dead hordes. Let’s be honest, a plague of the un dead would not only be horrific and terrifying, but it would sure do a lot to shake us from the every day grind of modern life. Think to yourself, however, how would you handle the living dead rising and coming to feast on your brains? Do you have the necessary zombie apocalypse survival gear to deal with such a situation?
Zombie Apocalypse Survival Gear Essentials
Footwear
Now, if you’ll remember back to the 2009 Zombie comedy film Zombieland, there are certain rules that one needs to follow in order to not become the undead’s lunch. The first and most important rule was Cardio. Now, of course you will want to be in good shape if something like this ever went down, and that’s on you – so get on the stair stepper or treadmill the next time you’re at the gym and start training! However, even with good fitness you aren’t going to get very far without some solid outdoors hiking footwear or boots. I’d recommend you get a very durable pair of either tactical or hiking boots that will both protect your feet and (in my own case) your ankles – because nothing will slow you down as fast as a nasty rolled ankle. Get something with some support for goodness sake! Here’s a couple ideas on the types of shoes I am referring to.
Food and water on the go
Now that you’ve got some good boots on your feet, the next piece of zombie apocalypse survival gear is all about fueling yourself. When something’s trying to eat you, you’ve got to eat yourself in order to have the energy to get out of dodge. And since there’s likely a horde of zombies everywhere you might not have the time to set up a campfire and cook up your grub. That’s why you’ll want to look into high density foods that can be eaten on the go. Think of Clif Bars, and MRE’s if you want more of a full meal. Water’s going to be tough to come by in the zombified world as well, so a LifeStraw or some other way of quickly being able to filter water from a stream or pond is going to be your best bet.
Tools of the trade
Now, in the zombie wasteland, you’ll probably need to get creative and use the tools around you – maybe for self protection, or maybe for building and fortifying your defenses against the brain eaters. If I had one tool to carry with me in a zombie world, it would be the time tested crowbar – great for being able to break apart supply crates, get into locked areas, or even whack a zombie in the head ala Gordon Freeman in the Half Life video game series (those head crab zombies are nasty!) I’d also look into a good multi tool and probably a pocket knife at the very least.
Case studies
Of course, no list of zombie apocalypse survival gear would be complete without some zombie shows and films. As the legendary Sun Tzu said in The Art of War:
If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.
There’s a plethora of zombie movies and TV shows to pick from – and it really depends on what kind of zombies you think you’re going to face. Are they old school, rising up out of the ground classically undead zombies, like in the Living Dead? Or, are they a result of a virus or mutation gone bad such as in Resident Evil or 28 Days Later? My advice, watch them all and see how the zombies and survivors act accordingly. With that, Happy haunting and have a great Halloween!
