What’s up campers?  Caleb here.  I know I haven’t posted on this shiz for a while, but it’s time to get back into things.   Spring is in the air and I have broken out my survival seed library collection!  I encourage everyone to try growing their own food, it’s both a therapeutic hobby and a great way to get some exercise and save money by creating your own delicious edibles!   Having said that, it takes a lifetime to master gardening, so if you’re planning on throwing some seeds in your cupboard and then expecting them to just magically grow in an emergency, you’re gonna have a bad time.  Also, if you’re a newbie gardener I would suggest picking up a book like Square Foot Gardening.   This book is a great resource that can help you to maximize the yields of your crops even if you’re planting in very limited space.

My Survival Seed Library picks:

I have purchased several different survival seed library / vaults in the past few years, and most of my experiences have been great.

Currently I have a lot of single packet seeds from Botanical Interests.  While these seeds are a little more expensive to purchase, they are extremely high quality and I find that you can purchase much more “exotic” types of veggies with this brand.   I usually at least get some kale and spinach seeds under this brand, and this year I have purchased some delicious Dragon’s Tongue arugula (what a manly arugula) and purple basil.

I also had the good fortune of running across a large variety of seeds from Renee’s Garden that someone was selling second hand on craigslist years ago.  I think these seeds were already a few years old when I purchased them back in 2014, and I am still having great germination with them this year.   I was able to plant a fantastic variety of peppers and tomatoes thanks to this seed company!  These guys, like B.I.  have a lot of specialty and rare breeds of produce, so they are certainly worth checking out if you want some more fancy crops for your garden.

Bulk Survival Seed Library choices

If you’re new to gardening or prepping, I would certainly suggest you look at a survival seed vault.   There are lots of different types of them out there, but I will post a few of the ones I have purchased.

Open Seed Vault – 32 variety pack

This is a convenient little pouch with over 15,000 seeds in 32 varieties.    All non GMO and non hybrid heirlooms, and a great price for the amount of seed.  Produced by Open Seed Vault.

Survival Essentials 100 Variety Pack

This is an impressive seed collection, and while it’s more expensive than the Open Seed Vault, it’s got a lot more variety and includes fruits and medicinal / culinary herb seeds as well.  By Survival Essentials.

My Patriot Supply Survival Seed Vault

This was the first survival seed library item that I ever bought, and I still think it’s a fantastic value.  It comes in a can with 20 easy to grow seed varieties – these are mostly the staple vegetables, but for the amount of seed you get it’s pretty impressive.  My Patriot Supply also has all sorts of freeze dried foods and other prepper type gear available.   I actually recently purchased another one of these for long term storage, and it sits neatly in the corner of my chest freezer.   That’s right, I have my own mini Svalbard Global Seed Vault!

I hope this post gives you a little inspiration to start your own food production and garden projects!  There’s a LOT of different options available, so research what grows well in your area, and what you like to eat.  Raising your own crops from seedling to dinner table is a really rewarding experience and I firmly believe that if every American household took time to grow their own food, we could really change things in the USA for the better!  Happy planting!
