You know that old saying “you’ll always remember your first”? Well, as far as survival books go, I will always remember and love the SAS Survival guide by John “Lofty” Wiseman. Collected from his experiences over 26 years in the SAS (Special Air Service), one of the most elite special forces units in the British army, This book packs a serious punch of useful knowledge in a very tiny package.
The updated version of this book, originally published in 1986, includes case studies and survival scenarios, along with a nifty app for your smart phone! There are several things I love about this survival guide, with the first and foremost being the fact that it’s literally about the size of a cell phone and barely weighs anything – making it the perfect addition to anyone’s bug-out or get home bag.
The SAS survival guide contains nearly 400 compact pages with all sorts of practical information – it’s written in a very straight to the point, proper Englishman style. 🙂 Topics cover a wide variety of survival related information, including:
- Choosing and sharpening a knife
- How to retain, find, and purify water
- Survival information for various climate zones all around Earth
- How to improvise methods of fishing, hunting, cleaning and cooking game
- Various ropes and knot information
- Information for surviving various natural disasters
As with any survival guide, it is handy to have in an emergency, but you’d probably be much better off reading and trying to retain some of this information before hand. This guide contains information that can be utilized on pretty much any continent you could find on the planet, and as such is pretty broad and generalized information. If you’re looking for a survival guide that is more directly localized to your own environment, this may not be the book for you. Regardless, I think everyone could benefit by having a copy of the SAS Survival Guide on hand.
