Wow, well that escalated quickly. It’s August 2017 and there’s talk of nuclear war. Great, right? Although what we are seeing right now on the news may be more rhetoric and saber rattling, it’s probably a good idea if you are of the preparedness mindset to consider some nuclear attack preparedness gear. What kind of items would help you in such a nightmare scenario?
First of all, I am going to post a Civil Defense film from the 1950s. Now, yes it’s old and the narraration sounds a bit like a travelling vaccum salesman, but this is still relevant information.
Now that we’ve gone over the basics, what are some good items to have on hand in such an event? Here are my top few:
Nuclear Attack Preparedness gear
Potassium Iodide Tablets
What are these little tablets and why could they save your life in a nuclear event? Well, it all has to do with your thyroid, a gland in your neck that produces hormones that control the function of almost every part of your body (read again, your thyroid is pretty damn important) The thyroid happens to be extremely susceptible to radiation, and what the tablets will accomplish is “fill up” your thyroid with non radioactive KI (Potassium Iodide) which will prevent it from absorbing any of the radioactive version. For more in depth reading, check out the CDC’s information on radiation.
Hand Crank Generators and Radio
Now, you would expect that as a result of any sort of nuclear accident or attack, there will be substantial damage to the power grid, probably knocking it out for an extended period of time. Assuming you were far enough away from the flash to not get turned into a dust shadow on the wall, you might want to have a way to crank up some electricity so you can find out what’s going on. There’s a wide range of pedal or hand driven generators, that can give you enough juice to fire up a radio, lights and other small appliances. Plus, if you get the bike pedal type, you’ll at least be able to get some exercise while you shelter in place and wait for the fallout to settle.
NCB rated gas masks
A gas mask could potentially save you from harmful nuclear, chemical and biological agents, but it’s rather important that you purchase one that has the NBC rating, as some of them available on the internet were only designed to repel dust, dirt and tear gas. The most reasonable one is the “Israeli Style Civilian” masks. You can also purchase additional NATO rated filters – these filters will be reliable for around 24 hours once they are opened and installed on the mask.
Hope this gives you some good ideas of things you may want to have on hand in terms of Nuclear Attack Preparedness gear. Of course you’ll also want a supply of food and water. While there’s a zillion things you would want to have on hand in such an event, hopefully this inspires you to take some common sense steps to protect yourself and your family.
