HQ Issue Outdoor Wood Stove unboxing

*Disclaimer* I haven’t fired this stove up yet, as I just received it – so this is just my ‘unboxing’ review*  Now that we’ve got that out of the way, I must say I am pretty impressed with this little wood stove!  I was surprised how heavy the box was when it arrived at my door step, apparently with the flue piping it weights almost 50 lbs, so this probably isn’t a great stove for a backpacker  (Unless you go backpacking with your trusty burroJuan Valdez style) but the HQ ISSUE Outdoor Wood Stove will make an excellent stove for tent camping, or even just out on your patio.

I picked up this stove in anticipation of receiving an old hunting tent from my father’s friend from when they used to go elk hunting in the rocky mountains together.  And any good hunting tent needs a stove, right?  I liked the simplicity of this one and the way it looked, so I went for it.   It appears to be made out of good, thick steel, and has a very heavy door on it with two air vents, one on top of the door and one on the bottom.  The latch to close the door is a little cumbersome, but could easily be remedied to make it easier to  handle (maybe by welding a little longer piece of metal to the latch)  What I was worried about was how long the flue pipe was, but after setting it up I was sure that it would be tall enough for the tent.  The flue pipe comes in 5 sections which add up to a little over 6 feet tall when connected together, and the top piece of pipe has a closed top with holes in the metal to let smoke escape.  I’m very excited to try this thing out sometime soon, and I will update this post once I have done just that.

Do note that you will have to assemble the legs and flue pipe attachment to the firebox, which will require a screwdriver with the right bit (I think we used the diamond shaped bit when assembling it) Also you should be aware that this stove clearly has marked on it that it is not EPA approved for a residential wood stove, so keep that caveat in mind.  Overall, I am pretty happy with my new HQ Issue Outdoor Wood Stove!
