Gerber Gator Machete Jr review

What else could one ask for as a Christmas gift, if not a machete?  I was surprised this Christmas morning to find the Gerber Gator machete Jr. under the tree, and it was a happy surprise indeed!  What an absolutely bad ass little mini machete.   Perfect for stashing away before the big zombie apocalypse, or for in reality just whacking some bushes in your back yard, the Gerber Gator Machete JR is a really cool looking machete blade that includes a decent nylon sheath for travel.   It’s got a classic machete blade on the cutting side, and a saw blade on the top of the knife.

With an overall blade length of 11.25 inches, the Gerber gator machete Jr.  is best suited for smaller cutting jobs- in fact that warning label on the machete states the following:

CAUTION:  This machete is a dangerous tool and if not used properly and should be used with the utmost care and caution.  Any use of the machete other than cutting is considered improper use, and may result in injury or damage.  Use the saw blade for branches of 1 inch in diameter or less.  If saw blade jams while cutting use extreme care when dislodging it.  Do not use the machete for prying.  do not use the machete if its blades are dull, bent, chipped or otherwise damaged or if the handle is broken or loose.  When handling the machete, direct the sharp points and edges away from you and others, and do not pick it up by the blade.  When the machete is not in use, store in its sheath or a safe place; and keep out of reach of children.  When using the machete, wear appropriate protective clothing and safety gear to protect your eyes, arms, legs and feet.

My only testing with this machete occurred versus some lavender plants at my house, and these were basically twig size branches I was going after.  The Gerber gator machete jr performed alright, but I definitely wouldn’t want this thing if I was stuck in the jungle somewhere trying to hack my way through thick vines or foliage.  Partially because of its small size and weight, I don’t really think you get all that much cutting power with it.  It’s also not the most expensive thing on the machete market by any means, so keep that in mind if you’re looking to tackle bigger branches or vines.

Still, it looks cool so I have to give it some kudos for that.
Happy camping!
