Hello campers! Today I wanted to do a quick review of a really nifty item I picked up for my camping and emergency stash. It’s the GEEKPRO solar charger with dual USB Ports and 4 mono-crystalline panels! What on earth is it you ask? Well, it’s kind of like having the ability to charge any USB device anywhere you can get some sunlight!
The GEEKPRO Solar Charger is about the size of a tablet, and folds neatly into a light, ready to go rectangle. The exterior is some sort of durable nylon material, and overall the unit feels solid and well put together. when unfolded, the charger reveals its four mono cystalline solar panels, ready to capture the sun’s energy and convert it to your phone! The actual USB charger portion of the unit is attached via velcro and can be de-tached in order to give you a little space (around five feet approximately) between the charger and the devices being charged. I’ve found that in full sun the unit can charge your cell phone at a rate fairly comparable to plugging into your wall. A note of caution, of course, is to not leave your cell phone out in full sun because the heat can damage it, so please use caution and cover up your electronics to insulate them from the sun’s rays.
Another cool feature is that the unit comes with a couple carabiners that can attach to the grommets of the unit, allowing you to hang it from a wall or window or wherever there’s some Sunny D! I’ve taken my geekpro solar charger camping and hiking several times and it has yet to fail me. I wouldn’t recommend getting the unit wet so if the clouds start forming you may want to put this into a more protective environment.
Of course, you can always leave it in a sunny window inside your house and still get the charging benefits. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone that wants to be able to charge small electronic devices out in the wilderness or in a situation where your power has gone out!
