Another trip to Costco ends with another piece of survival gear! On my latest journey out to the wholesale Mecca, I was stopped in my tracks by this big, shiny LED lantern. It beckoned to me ever so softly, and ended up in my cart by the end of the shopping trip. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Enbrighten LED lantern.
My research on the Enbrighten LED lantern thus far has indicated that it is produced by General Electric (GE) and there seem to be several models of it available. The model I picked up appears to have been produced in China by JASCO, however and was created for distribution in Costco stores… your milage may vary. It has the following stats:
- Up to 600 lumens
- Up to 240 hours battery life
- USB device charging capability
It’s a nice looking lantern that is powered by 8 (yes, count em, 8) D batteries. I picked this lantern up in order to bolster my emergency lighting options, and while battery operated items aren’t my favorite I think it’s good to have several different modalities in order to cover all your bases. The lantern’s base is a nice metallic finish and it feels robust when held (the Enbrighten LED lantern weighs in at just under three pounds) . The packaging indicates that the lantern is both impact and water resistant, and provides 360 degree omni directional lighting. It also claims to have a lifetime LED warranty, so the light source ‘never needs replacing’. With your 8 D batteries, you can expect 240 hours of light on the lowest setting, and 50 hours of light on the brightest setting.
This probably wouldn’t be my first emergency light source due to its reliance on battery power, but it’s definitely worth having a backup in case you need it. D batteries can be a little pricey, so just keep in mind it’ll cost you another twenty or so dollars to stock up enough batteries to juice this puppy up. Having said that, it produces a good amount of light that can easily get a room pretty well lit in a 0 power situation. It’s earned a place in my survival lighting cache, and I am glad to have it in case I ever need it!
