So, this one’s for those of you who are new to disaster preparation. I know, it can get kind of overwhelming at first! There’s so much to do! One of the main survival stockpiles you will need to think about is your food. Of course, every food has a shelf life, and you’ll have to eventually rotate through your stocks so they don’t spoil, but here are some easy to store survival food ideas that can give you a great head start.
Canned Soups, Broths, Chili
While canned foods can get kind of heavy, they last for a very long time and are relatively safe as long as the can hasn’t been damaged in anyway. Never eat from a can of food if it’s bulging, or has any sort of bad smell about it) Another advantage of canned food is that they often will also have some water content, so in a way you’re also storing water along with whatever food contents the can has. A great way to get started in terms of easy to store survival food.
Here are some of my favorites:
Campbell’s soups
Canned Chili
Swanson Broths
Bagged Soup Mixes and dehydrated potatoes
These wonderful little packets contain all sorts of tasty soups and can be created just using some hot water. They are light weight, bendable, and you can easily put a couple hundred of these into a plastic tote. Along with these I have a good stock pile of Idahoan potatoes, which come in all sorts of varieties and again, are lightweight and only require some water to create.
Pickled Items
In the days of olde, long before modern day refridgeration techniques, the most common methods of preserving food came in the forms of either salting, or pickling. Pickling is a skill you can master at home with the right equipment (and it’s pretty fun!) but for now we’ll just look at store bought pickled items. These include classic dill pickles, but honestly you can pickle just about anything, including some meats! A flavorful addition to any easy to store survival food list.
Pasta!
No prepper pantry would be complete without a healthy heaping of various dried pastas! Did you know that dried pastas will double in size from its original proportions? So, about 1 lb of dried pasta is enough to feed four people. It’s also got a really long shelf life, making it easy to store away for a while before you end up eating it.
Well, I hope this gives you a basic idea of some of the easy to store survival food items you can get started with. As always, try to stock stuff you’ll actually want to eat on a regular basis, because the concept is to stock up a bunch and then rotate through it, so that nothing goes to waste.
Enjoy!
